Wielding spiky post-punk guitar riffs and smarter-than-average lyrics, Maximo Park recently released a third album, the tune-laden and instantly likeable Quicken the Heart, which showcases their expansive, multilayered sound. They're often lumped in with other indie guitar bands, but the ideas and influences on show here are out of the ordinary. Their jittery art-pop and full-on performances – not to mention charismatic, hat-wearing frontman Paul Smith – have won them armies of die-hard fans, but if you haven't heard them yet then upcoming gigs at Isle of Wight, T in the Park, Glastonbury, Leeds and Reading are all good places to start.
